HISTORY: Representatives from education, law enforcement, business, parents, faith-based community, treat-ment, prevention, social services, medicine and government formed the Coalition in 1990 under the auspices of the Summit County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADM) Board. The Partnership is Summit County’s Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and is the only one of the 13 Ohio Partnerships origi-nally funded by the federal Office of Substance Abuse Prevention Demonstration Program that continues to exist.
MISSION: The mission of the Partnership is to facilitate coalitions of community resources in order to prevent alcohol and other drug abuse in Summit County. The Coalition uses science based prevention techniques, in-formation, and activities in an attempt to infuse them into every community system. The goals of the Partner-ship along with the state of Ohio's prevention goals guide our strategies and activities.
MEMBERS: The coalition strives to involve the entire community. Representatives from medicine, business, law enforcement, education, families, social service organizations, local, county and national government, and ethnic/cultural communities work together as part of the coalition. The Partnership engages Community Leaders in collaborating within a Social Responsibility model and holds consistently high expectations for achievement and sustainable impact across the public/private sectors creating environmental change. By de-veloping strategic collaborative partnerships the Community Partnership ensures an alignment of goals and measures of success, effective use of funds to address neighborhood conditions in a productive fashion and links to developing and retaining employees

A Partnership of Service
“A September 2008 report from the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) says that
alcohol, tobacco and other drug use rates were lower than national averages in cities and towns with coalitions funded by the Drug Free Communities (DFC) program.
Annual youth marijuana, alcohol and tobacco use in DFC communities was 9.9 percent, 23.3 percent , and 10 percent lower respectively, than the national average for use of these substances. Trends in current use among DFC communities were compared with national data from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System.
The report also found that youth drug use declined more rapidly in communities with DFC coalitions that the national average.” - Join Together Online (www.jointogether.org).” September 25, 2008
In 2008, the Summit County Community Partnership coalition completed its tenth and final year as a fed-eral Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Drug Free Communi-ties Grantee. Thousands of communities competed for this support and received grants for part of the funding period. The Summit County Partnership was successful in meeting all requirements and expecta-tions to garner a full decade of support, the maximum possible within federal guidelines. With this fund-ing the Partnership supported: The Youth Drug Use Survey conducted since 1992, which generated front page stories (Akron Beacon Journal [ABJ], 3/31/2000; 6/29/07) and editorials (ABJ. 7/1/2007). Without Partnership support and guid-ance, a county-wide survey would cost the community at least $300,000. The Partnership’s locally pro-duced drug use data reflects results that mirror those reported by the Office of National Drug Control Pol-icy. Summit County demonstrated reductions from the 2005 levels in use of beer (from 28% to 23%), wine coolers (from 27% to 15%) and tobacco (from 23% to 15%) among 8th graders in Summit County. Drug Free Workplace (DFWP) supervisor and employee training. The Partnership is an ODADAS listed DFWP provider; The University of Akron and surrounding community— The Partnership provides ID scanners for al-cohol service training and provides Responsible Seller Server Trainings to help curtail binge and underage drinking; Methamphetamine Identification and Avoidance; Diversity and prevention training with local organizations.
